Baby Bait For Presidential Candidates

One of the Presidential candidates will be the future leader of our country, but would you trust them to hold your babe? One dad did.

Darren Garnick, father of two, recants his experience hitting the campaign trail for pictures of Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John McCain, John Edwards, Rudy Giuliani, Dennis Kucinich, Bill Richardson and Mitt Romney with his 5-month-old daughter, Dahlia in a recent Slate article. He wrote:

"As a resident of the "Live Free or Die" state, I'll concede that the New Hampshire presidential primary gives us ridiculously disproportionate influence. But I love the fact that my state's electoral power comes with a great fringe benefit: It's easy to enshrine the next president in your family scrapbook. A sucker for political kitsch, I set out to photograph my 5-month-old daughter, Dahlia, in the arms of every candidate with a prayer of making it to the White House."

To finish the post, read more.

The quest for photographs took Garnick from a parade to a private party and a sporting goods shop to a bookstore. But, he is no novice when it comes to getting political figures to say cheese with his lil ones. He admitted:

"During the 2004 presidential race, I took a few photos of my then 2-year-old boy, Ari, with Democrats Howard Dean, Joe Lieberman, and Wesley Clark. As a first-time parent, I was overly protective and had most of the candidates pose next to his stroller."

Probably not, but it wouldn't have anything to do with them specifically. If they're out there shaking hands and hugging supporters, I don't want them holding my baby without some hand sanitizer. *lol*

Greggie I was thinking the same thing with the amount of hand shaking they have to do. He does have a really cool collection of photo ops with his babe though.

I think it's cute - but I'm a political junkie - It doesn't look like she going to grow up to be a Republican, she's only mad in the McCain and Giuliani photos.

Seeing Dahlia' moods in those three pics with Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani and John McCain, she's definitely a cute, little democrat!

I don't really know what the difference is between the Obama and Clinton pics, and the others, but these two are really cute Smiling it's like they're actually interested in the baby girl and not what's around!

She's got her pacifier in her Edwards & Clinton pics, so she may still be undecided for now. Smiling

I'm surprised Mrs. Clinton couldn't fake a smile for the child.

Though I hate to fall into gender stereotyping by commenting on a baby girl's looks, that baby looks like such a sweetie.

I hate to say it, but Hillary looks really uncomfortable here. How can holding a baby not make you smile?

Looks like Hilary Clinton is talking to the baby, babies are not stupid you don't always have to fake a smile for them you can talk to them too to make them comfortable. McCain can't hold this baby, all the others look really lovely Smiling

How interesting. Hilary looks motherly. Obama looks fatherly. McCain is so cute. Edwards looks like a used car salesman. And Romney.... oh boy - this picture speaks volumes. He is all about posing and looking "presidential" in the picture - holding a baby like a prop.

I think Hillary looks more angry than motherly... But I love the pic of Giuliani (I wonder if he's talking to her in baby voice or something?? because his expression is bizarre) and the one of McCain, who just looks like he doesn't know what is going on. Cuuute cute cute baby! Smiling

Twink, I thought the same thing at first. There's something in her posture that just looks uncomfortable. But her face looks wistful to me. Very motherly.

how on earth do you think hillary looks maternal? that's a scary photo IMO. she looks completely unnatural, and shows no warmth.. at least everyone else is smiling.

Dahlia is my niece so I am COMPLETELY biased.....but she is beautiful, sweet and luckily has a great sense of humor which she will need when she gets older and sees all the commotion that these simple pictures have caused. I am glad that you all liked them...you can check out her father Darren being interviewed this weekend on NPR's "Weekend America" radio show. Go online to find the radio listing and time near you.
p.s. I am certainly hoping that she is leaning the democrat way as well Smiling

It's funny that the woman, who should be the most motherly, is the most uncomfortable looking one.

What an AWESOME thing to do for one's child. I mean, what a great story this will make throughout her life.

Like when they ask her to bring in a picture of her as a baby for the highschool yearbook, and then she comes in with a former president's picture - awesome!

Also - I am sorry to say - but it is just too funny - it looks like Romney is choking her with the way his hands are and the way her tongue is sticking out. (Or perhaps that was just a look of disgust on her face Eye-wink)

    girlfriday,

I didn't even think about that... being able to take your picture with a former president to school.
At the school I graduated from at our prom we had a video that had baby pictures and everyone guessed who it was and then it had the SR pic. That would be an awesome baby pic to have up on the video screen Laughing out loud

Hillary looks like she would rather be ANYWHERE other than holding a baby while stumping for political attention. At least the others look like they are trying to interact with the the little one.

Great keepsake for your beautiful baby girl.
