Did Pregnancy Make You a Woman?

Papa Joe Simpson recently said that daughter Ashlee, 24, became a woman the day she found out she was pregnant. Do you agree with his sentiment or were you a woman before you were with child?

No. I became a different kind of woman when I got pregnant, but it wasn't when I fully became a woman. Regardless of if I'd had children, I'd have "felt like a woman."

I found I personally had a new/different appreciation for my parents, but I was a woman before the pregnancy.

I think this type of thinking does women who can't or choose not to have children a great disservice. Are they not real women then? It's very odd to me.

He is so icky. If my dad said things like that about me, I would be seriously disgusted...and a little angry. Can't they tell him to SHUT IT.

Anyway, no it did not make me a woman. I was a woman before I got pregnant. It changed things about me, but had no bearing on my womanhood.

I also agree with Schnappy, what does this say about all of those who can't/don't have children? They can't be women? Statements like this, while not meant to be, are borderline offensive.

I find this comment so incredibly sexist, like we're back in the era where a woman's role was to produce children and take care of their husband. Then again, I'd expect little else from Papa Joe aka creepiest dad EVER.

i haven't had children yet, but i don't consider having children or being pregnant as the catapult for becoming a woman. Perhaps he meant maturity? shrug Being pregant/bearing kids is an aspect of being a woman but isn't the true definition. Becoming a full adult woman is a more personal and, at times, spiritual moment that varies for people.

didn't some jean company say that their jeans made you feel like a woman? hmmm. and becoming a mother certainly made me feel pretty impressed with myself...but i guess lots of things do Smiling and i agree that for those who choose not to have children or who can't biologically conceive, that statement would be sure to ellicit a WTF?

Call me old fashion, but shouldn't the transition between girl and woman happen before conceiving a child? At 24 years old, I'd only hope that she would be adult enough to consider herself a woman without becoming pregnant first.

Maybe it "made her a women" in his eyes because she was so young when she got pregnant, and not necessarily age-wise but her general maturity level. She still reminds me of a high school aged hippie

Don't get me started on this.

I'm married, and we're child-free by choice. I was told by another woman (several years younger than me with two children) that I was not a woman because I don't have children. That's ludicrous.

I don't think his comment was icky (earlier comments have been icky though). I guess I juts thought he meant it as she grew up, nothign sexual about it. She is still very young so maybe she was very girlish and irresponsible before (getting pregnant unplanned) and now has changed into an adult woman with responsibilities.
