babysugar Diaries: Primping for Delivery

Call me vain, but this week I decided to pamper myself with a bikini wax, haircut, and a mani pedi. I did it mostly for delivery room hygiene, but I also indulged because who knows when I will be able to afford such luxuries again. I'll soon have two children at home.

The haircut was relaxing, as was the hand and foot massage that accompanied the painting of my nails. The waxing, however, was more like a torture chamber. To see what happened, read more.

The whole time, all I could think of was, "Whooaaa . . . Kelly Clarkson!" If you need a reference, please rent the The 40 Year Old Virgin. I found it well worth 90 minutes of my life. Nearly jumping off the table with every pulling rip, I began to sweat and held onto my tummy feeling healthy, if not aggressive, kicks from the wee one as I begged for mercy. Finally, it was over and I wondered to myself, "What possessed me to do that?" At least if I go into labor tonight, the hospital staff can say I am one well-groomed mama. But this isn't a beauty competition now is it?

Did you primp for your delivery experience?

i don't have kids, but i feel like this is a worthwhile investment to keep in mind for when i do
i don't feel very happy when i don't look good, so i feel like something can be said for pre-grooming and doing the best you can before you give birth because afterwards there will be no time!
at least you know when you take pictures and have visitors with your new little bundle of joy, you look your best without having to do anything at the time
cuz i'll definitely be that mom in the delivery room putting on makeup before someone snaps my pic

I'm totally planning on it - sans the bikini wax. I actually got my hair cut yesterday because I just needed something fresh and I'll do it again before I deliver. I'm planning on a pedi this next week for me and in preparation for a wedding I'm attending next weekend. And I'll get one more before the baby comes at the end of January (God willing).

I did it with my first baby too. I loved having pretty toes at the hospital. It sounds so vain, but it was for me and made me feel good about myself when my body was definitely not mine.

i did the wax just three days before giving birth...not only did i feel better about everyone and their mother looking at my vag, but i also thought it was better to deal with the aftermath of birth; you know the recovery, the stitches, the cleansing and so fourth..

well worth the pain. and you are right about not having time, i only have one and find it difficult to get my hair done or have a mani/pedi!

I cannot handle waxing during pregnancy- I bleed and am super prone to cysts. I keep it shaved- but meandtheo has a point.

No, 90 minutes for watching The 40-year-Old Virgin. *lol* I read it the same way first though.

I'd never do any waxing that close to delivery because hormones and everything do tend to make it much more painful, but I also only wax my eyebrows normally anyway. I did a pedicure as close to my scheduled c-section as possible, and made sure my legs and pits were shaved the morning of the c-section.

With my first, thinking I was having a vaginal delivery, I didn't do anything with bikini area either.

I hope you were able to enjoy your self babysugar! When I was at the doctor's office and found out I was going to need a c-section, I immediately called my hairdresser and booked an appointment for a blowout! I figured I might as well look nice in the photos since I wouldn't have to be sweating through a labor. It turned out to be a great idea because I don't think I could have handled washing/drying my hair at the hospital after that surgery!

i was a regular waxer (brazilian no less) before i got pregnant... but DURING... i couldnt even fathom it... things were soooo sensitive i was petrified... AND i have two friends who waxed & went into labor (i hope that doesnt happen to babysugar unless you want it to). i used a buzzer thingie (and a mirror)... but to be honest... and to be completely honest... i'm STILL nervous about waxing (and he just turned a year old)!!! hah.... (altho i think meandtheo has a really good point about the healing process).

and i was a regular w/the pedi also, every two weeks. it was a needed luxury!

I totally did all of this. And agree that it's all worth it... even the bikini wax.

I personally did not have time to primp. My water broke completely unexpectedly 5 weeks early. I didn't even have a bag packed. So my legs were not shaved and I was definitely a beast down below. But I had to have a c-section so they shaved me Smiling

I like to keep regularly groomed in that area anyways, so I can imagine that when I have a baby I will want to be pretty clean down there. I agree that it seems helpful for the recovery. For the rest of it- at nine months pregnant- you deserve as much primping and pampering as you can handle!

With my son, I definitely had my hair done, brows freshly waxed, and a good, long pedicure.

This time, I don't think I'll be able to squeeze in a pedi before my daughter is born in two weeks...but I was glad I did my hair and made the brow appointment...because suddenly you are a month and a half post partum and can't see out from under your brows and roots, wondering when you're going to get the time to go and get these things done. Smiling I shudder to think how long it's going to take me now that I'll be balancing two kids, one was challenge enough!

This is hilarious - I just watched the movie "Knocked Up" again, and during the "crowning" scene at the end I noticed that Katherine Heigl's character was completely hairless down below

My first comment was "Yeah right - I'm sure that's the last thing you're thinking about when you are 9 months pregnant!!"

    Apparently I was wrong!!

I can't imagine going in for a brazilian the week before giving birth -- but if there's a way, I'll find it!

A month before I was due with my son, I got an amazing pedicure and haircut. And it was a good idea to get it all done because it was months before I got my hair cut again and I still havn't had a pedicure since!

Plus, a pedicure for those sore swollen feet was wonderful.

To add to my previous comment, the one thing I did NOT do was get waxed. I was told that it would hurt more than ever before because that area is so sensitive and when I got waxed in my 5th month, it was awful. I figured I would skip out on the wax since it would be a while until that mattered anyways. Plus, the OB has seen it all anyways.

I got the pedi, but was in no way getting waxed since I never do that not pregnant. I shave normally, but with a huge belly you can't really see down in that region so I had the hubby help me. lol Smiling
