Did Nicole Name Her Daughter to Spite Scientology?

I'm not buddies with Nicole Kidman or Matthew McConaughey, but I'll admit it's kind of fun learning what they named their children. While Levi was greeted with cheers, Sunday Rose Kidman Urban's moniker was received with mixed emotion. After much curiosity, elated grandfather Antony revealed the meaning behind the babe's name. He told Sydney's Daily Telegraph:

I have read a bit about Sunday Reed and her husband John – she was a key mover and shaker in the arts around the beginning of the century. . . The name Sunday struck me as being a nice name for a woman, so my wife and I mentioned it.

Not surprisingly, some doubters are already speculating other reasons for the name. To see what one source says, read more.

The Huffington Post wonders if the statuesque beauty didn't pick the name Sunday as an insult to her ex–husband Tom Cruise's religion Scientology. The site quotes a source from MSNBC:

Nicole is a Catholic, and Sunday was an important religious day for her until she was involved in Scientology. She's still bitter about her experience with Scientology and the fact her baby's name could be perceived as one last jab doesn't exactly upset her.

I have a hard time believing the blissful couple would be revengeful when naming their newborn baby. What do you think of the name–jabbing theory?

Ummm, how long ago did she divorce Tom? And why do they keep bringing the scientology issue up? People need to move on!

I saw this story on Digg yesterday and quoted from the original Lilsugar story about Nicoles dad interviewing with the Daily Telegraph. Being so family oriented, would hestitate her to put any creedence in the malarky they are spewing:)

Are they kidding? I seriously don't see Nicole Kidman naming her child Sunday just to spite Tom, nor do I think Keith Uran would agree to that. People really just dig for trouble.

They thought it was a pretty name. The press should just let it be.

That is the most tenuous connection to scientology! If they had named their daughter Gillian they would be saying, "oh, well- Gillian Anderson was on X-files and that was about aliens and so is scientology, so...."

    I think it's a cute name for a girl!
Even if it is revengeful, it's adorable in my opinion.

And how many grey cells did all these people saying her naming her baby Sunday have to do with scientology and how long did it take them to come up with it? I didn't realise that the Catholic church needed Kidman to take back the Sabbath, the Jews must be grateful, too.

Oh and yes, every decision that Kidman makes always have to do with Cruise, doesn't it? I mean his life and career cause one to be envious, don't they?

Agree with all the comments above - Sunday is hardly some kind of great Catholic name. One might suggest Mary comes a bit higher, but also Assumpta, Concepta, etc. And what kind of maniac would name a child to spite the religion of their ex. Sunday is rather a pretty name.

nah, i do not LOVE the name but no one would want spite attached to their most precious 'possession', especially not sweet Nicole! i guess they just like the name. hey, i don't usually agree with her choices in fashion either but to each her own!

I think Sunday is just a lovely name for a girl and I'm pretty sure Nicole is over trying to get "revenge" on Tom.

I thought Sunday was kinda weird at first, but it's grown on me. I think Sunny would be a cute nickname for their baby.
