Traditionally, a woman took her husband's surname and their offspring followed suit. But, these days all different combinations of people make up families and that is reflected in the variety of options that parents have when choosing their child's last name. Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani went old school when they named their son. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie combined their monikers with a hyphen for their mini mes. And, Bridget Moynahan gave her babe middle names for his father, Tom Brady, but made him a Moynahan.

I'm definitely a stickler for tradition, but I say if the mom is the only one raising the child, and especially if she is the only parent in their life, then they should share the same last name, just for normalcy factors.
I know I hated it when I was little and Mom changed her last name when she got remarried.
It seemed so weird that we had different names.
I was almost embarrassed in a way.
